Microbrand
Nomos
nomos-glashuette.comFounded in Glashütte two months after the Berlin Wall fell, Nomos rebuilt German watchmaking on Bauhaus principles: thin, rational, quietly beautiful. Unlike almost every brand at its price, Nomos designs and builds its own movements — including its own escapement, the 'swing system,' a feat that took seven years and put it in a club with perhaps a dozen manufactures worldwide. The Tangente is the entry point; the Lambda lines are hand-finished to a level that embarrasses watches at five times the price.
Deutsche Werkstätten craftsmanship, Berlin design studio sensibility, honest pricing — there is no better-value in-house manufacture on earth.
Worth knowing
Sizing runs flat and wide (the Tangente wears larger than its diameter), water resistance is modest on dress lines, and the minimalist aesthetic either speaks to you or doesn't.
